Ashoka Ashtami Katha, Legend of Ashok Ashtami, Story behind Ashok Ashtami
Ashoka Ashtami ic celebrated on Chaitra Shukla Ashtami. There is an interesting story behind celebrating this festival. People believe that God Sri Rama performed Ashoka ashtami rituals for defeating Ravana.
According to the Legend, Lord Rama was unable to kill Ravana as he was being protected by Goddess shakti. With the advice from Vibhishana, Sri Ram prayed Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva for seven days and pleased them. On the eighth day, Lord Ram was able to kill Ravana.
After the vicorty, Lord Ram took out a procession of Goddess Shakti and Shiva on the eighth day. From that day onwards people celebrating Ashokashtami in a grand manner at the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar in Orissa.
